Undertaking chapter 7

At this point, Logan would rather be dead. Hollywood dramatized these terrible scenarios making it look scary. There was a safety net though. The viewer may feel that they are right there with the main character, but safe on the other side of the screen. Being put in those very situations are completely different. There was no screen montage that hurried the scene along. Every moment was experienced in its most raw form.

Logan sat naked in the corner of some dark and dreary room. He was locked in a cage with tough rope ripping into his wrists. The amount of time he spent there was unknown. Without a window or clock in sight he couldn’t tell what time of day it was. Little was told to him, but the most important. He was their captive and soon to be their ransom.

Since the Prince Gambit had been attacked and everyone, supposedly, killed, Logan had spent every waking moment in torture. They had gone into hiding since the assault to let any kind of heat die down before they made their next move. The leader of the mercenaries that murdered his family decided to earn some extra cash by kidnapping the only surviving heir to his family’s fortune. Logan knew they wouldn’t hand him over alive in the end. Its just how reality works.

“The pay out for your ass will set us up for years to come!” Chief grabbed Logan’s neck and growled into his ear, “Don’t run away. We’re not even close to finishing.”

The mercenaries had taken to tormenting Logan as much as they wanted. Since Wild Dog had caught him with his boyfriend, the group had taken turns raping him. Each time they did, they would say something that was meant to hurt his mentality. They were successful … to a degree.

Chief had told him about his devious plan even though it stabs his previous employers in the back. Wild Dog ridiculed him for being a faggot even as he was balls deep in Logan’s ass. He was quite vocal about ‘capping’ his boyfriend in the head. The creep they called Specter was the worst. He enjoyed abusing his captive. The methods he used were a combination of beatings, verbal abuse, choking until unconscious and plenty of penetration in any way he could fit his cock in.

The only one who showed any sign of consideration was Bulldog. Whenever he decided to let Logan out of his cage, he was caring and gentle. Logan had found himself looking forward to his time with Bulldog. Serving his family’s murderers had become his daily chore. So, when he found moments of reprieve, Logan savored it for as long as he could.

This routine had gone on for so long, something was bound to give. Either one of them would take things too far and kill their captive before they could ransom him or the unexpected. In all that time Logan had spent in his cage, not one of them cared to inspect it. They didn’t even consider changing his bindings. The insults they threw at him told Logan they thought he was just a weak rich boy they could do as they pleased with. Logan wasn’t a threat in their eyes and that’s just what he used to his adavantage.

Over time, Logan broke and bent one of the small bars that contained him. It was in the perfect spot that allowed him to work at his restraints. There were multiple times he thought he was going to be caught, but the assholes never paid his cage enough attention. Every moment Logan spent there, he worked at the rope. He was careful to hide the one spot he tore at in the space between his wrists.

A small glimmer of hope slowly grew as he ripped further into the restraint. The very same entertainment that glorified situations like this still came in handy. Logan thought hard about all the crime and action shows he had watched over his life and pieced together a fragile plan for his escape. Everything had to fall into place for it to work.

One always thinks they will be ready for when their plan goes into action. Predicting a starting line, you can’t see is just wasteful thinking. Logan thought as much that he started to panic one morning. As he had been ripping at the rope, he realized he cut too deeply. The threads were barely hanging together. He wasn’t ready or in any position to break his restraints now. If he did, they’d just find their captive unbound in a cage. They’d beat him senseless or worse.

When Chief suddenly came into the room seeking another round, Logan damn near shit himself. “All right, boy. I’ve got a hunk of wood to beat you with this time.”

Logan was quick to slip the fickle threads under his wrists and bent his fingers to hold onto the straps. He was smart to do so as Chief yanked him from the cage by his restraints. Once out, the burly man threw Logan against the nearest wall. With his back against the cold surface, Logan looked at the man with the same weak expression as he had been giving him for some time. In that look he took note of the knife strapped to his captor’s side. They had indeed gotten lazy.

“You’ve become so obedient.” Chief eyed him with a sick hunger, “Almost makes me reconsider killing you after the big payday.”

The large man approached Logan like a predator to his prey. His body pressed firmly against Logan as the man dipped his head towards his neck. Logan felt teeth bite into his skin making another mark along with the others. Pain ripped through him and fueled the adrenaline boiling in his veins. In a flurry, Logan took the biggest chance of his life yet.

The rope pinning his hands together ripped at the harsh tug Logan gave them. As they were pinned between his and Chief’s body, it was easy for him to slip them out and reach for the knife. Chief didn’t have a chance to react as the point of his own knife was driven into his side. The man shoved himself backwards only to feel the blade slip out of him.

Fresh blood coated the knife in Logan’s hand. He didn’t wait for another reaction from his captor and attacked. Where Logan had stabbed him distracted Chief from the blade digging into the space between his neck and shoulders. In a panicked thought, Logan let go of the knife, leaving it sticking out of him.

Chief tried to shout, but only gargled the blood spurting from his mouth. It seemed like it would never end as each moment was his last. Hitting the floor, Chief was losing the ability to move. With shacky legs, Logan approached him to watch his final breaths. A dark anger came over him as he looked down on the mercenary. The emotions going through him were fresh and alien yet consumed him, nonetheless.

Logan crouched next to the man and pulled the knife from his neck, “This is for my family.” Before the man’s life could flicker out by itself, he drove the blade into Chief’s heart.

He watched the life leave the man with all the satisfaction that comes with revenge killing. The next thought that popped into Logan’s head was that he wasn’t finished. To his dismay he was discovered before he could make his next move. Their commotion was louder than expected causing one of the others to investigate the disturbance.

“Yo, Chief, you bangin’ the kid’s head against the wall or – what?” Wild Dog stood in the doorway taking in the sight before him. He suddenly shouted, “Chief’s down! You’re dead kid!”

Fear blotted out any vengeful emotions within Logan. He screwed up! This was it for him. At least he took down his family’s killer. The gunfire to follow shocked him to the core. He believed every bullet had struck him. It must have, but there was no pain. No bodily convulsions. Nothing.

Logan didn’t realize he had his eyes squeezed shut. When he opened them, he dropped to his knees. In front of him was the dying body of Wild Dog. The mercenary had been shot from behind and was now laying face down on the floor. Looking up, he saw another body just outside the doorway. Logan couldn’t tell which one it was, but they were shot from the side seeing as how their body was laying.

A shudder coursed through him when he saw Bulldog step into his view holding a pistol. He looked at Logan with trepidation. Bulldog was visibly troubled with what he had done. Betraying his comrades was not something he practiced in his career. When his eyes locked with Logan’s, he put the gun on the floor and stepped into the room.

“Its okay,” he tried a calming tone, but wasn’t as successful, “No one is going to hurt you now.”

“Wha-what – why? Why would you do that?” Logan stammered inching backwards from the man.

Bulldog sighed and got down on his knees as a sign of resignation. “This wasn’t supposed to happen. We weren’t supposed to kidnap you.”

Anger spiked within Logan, “No fucking shit! You just killed your friends!”

“They’re not my friends,” Bulldog shook his head. “Wild Dog was my brother, but,” he hesitated a moment before continuing, “we had been going down a dark path. Chief was getting greedy, and the others were too willing to go along with him.”

“So you killed them?”

Bulldog looked him dead in the eye, “Yes. For you.”

That caught Logan off guard, “I don’t understand.”

“You shouldn’t,” he stated as a matter of fact. “I don’t fully understand myself. Maybe I wanted a small piece of redemption before I die.”

Logan glared at him, “Redemption? You think you’d get that by killing your comrades?”

“If it gave you a chance at freedom then yes.”

A multitude of thoughts passed through Logan’s mind. All just as confusing as the last. He didn’t know what to do right away. Killing the man would make him feel better, but what use did he have at that now. Logan wasn’t a killer. Not like they were. Yes, he did just kill someone, but that’s what blood thirsty vengeance does to the innocent. Through all the confusion that stormed his mind, one brewed larger than the rest.

“I know how you can get your redemption.” Logan said getting up from the ground. He approached Bulldog offering, “Help me avenge my family.”

He looked confused at the naked man standing in front of him, “But you already did.”

Logan shook his head, “No I haven’t. This Circle is the real reason my family is dead. You all were just the weapons. They were the ones who pulled the trigger.” Logan held out his hand, “Help me get my vengeance and you’ll have your redemption.”

With a glance at his gesture, Bulldog took it sealing their agreement.
